Over 120 children are learning, growing, and being fed — children who, without this school, would have nowhere to go.
"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it."
— Proverbs 22:6
It is easy to assume that public school in Haiti is free. It is not. Even government schools charge enrollment fees, uniform costs, and exam fees that push education out of reach for many of the poorest families. The result is heartbreaking and simple: children who want to learn, who are ready to learn, who have everything they need except money — stay home.
Babak Iranmanesh, a medical professional from the United States, first visited Cap-Haïtien on a mission trip and noticed those children. Not once, but every time he came. The same kids. The same streets. Every day, outside, with nowhere to go.
"Every time I visited Cap-Haïtien, I was struck by the children who couldn't afford school, just hanging outside all day. That broke my heart."
— Babak IranmaneshThat heartbreak led to a conversation. That conversation became a commitment. And that commitment became École Communautaire de la Grâce — the Community School of Grace.
The school opened its doors to neighborhood children at tuition rates so low that almost no family is turned away. Today it serves over 120 children with qualified teachers, a Christ-centered curriculum, and something that surprises first-time visitors: a daily hot meal that for many students is the only one they will receive that day.
Haiti has one of the lowest primary school completion rates in the Western Hemisphere. Only about half of Haitian children finish primary school. That is not because children don't want to learn or families don't value education. It is because the cost — financial, logistical, and societal — is simply too high for many to bear.
In the neighborhoods around our campus in Cap-Haïtien, families are making impossible choices every day: school fees or food. Uniforms or rent. When resources run out, school is usually the first thing to go.
A child who doesn't complete primary school is far more likely to live in poverty as an adult. Cycles of undereducation become cycles of need that pass from generation to generation. We believe breaking that cycle is one of the most powerful things we can do.
At our school, a child doesn't just get a classroom. They get teachers who care about them, a curriculum grounded in Christian values, a hot meal that keeps them present and focused, and the message — every single day — that they matter.
Every student who walks through our doors receives a complete environment for learning, growing, and thriving.
